Earlier: Denmark Produces Immigration Patriot Leftist (!) Female (!!) Prime Minister. What Can U.S. Learn?
Quiet and uneventful Scandinavia has changed so fundamentally in the last few decades that “quiet” and “uneventful” are increasingly anachronistic descriptions. Sweden has degenerated into lawless chaos; its cities are dangerous, and rapes, muggings and gang violence are part of life now. Neighboring Finland, the last Nordic country to join the multicultural party, seems to be doing its best to catch up. Norway also has a serious problem with rape and violence, overwhelmingly due to Islamic immigration. Crime has become so bad that Scandinavian ruling elites, who for so long have espoused mass immigration, know something must be done. Result: Following Denmark, the only Nordic country actually dealing with mass immigration, they are considering — wait for it! — D-E-P-O-R-T-A-T-I-O-N.

Recently the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, said something that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. He intends to tackle Sweden’s problem with Islamic gang violence by adopting Denmark’s strict immigration policies, and he blamed violent crime on “an irresponsible immigration policy” and “failed integration” [Swedish PM summons army, police chiefs as gang violence rocks nation, by Johan Ahlander, Reuters, September 29, 2023].
“The Swedish government is truly looking at how the Danish government has worked with both fighting organized crime but also on migration issues,” explained Maria Malmer Stenegard, Swedish Minister for Migration [Nordic countries to cooperate more on returning migrants to countries of origin, by Johannes Birkebaek, Reuters, October 31, 2023]. It is likely no coincidence that the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, who did so well in the country’s election last year, prop up the coalition government, which lacks a parliamentary majority. (Similarly, the vote for the anti-immigration Finns Party increased yet again this year, meaning it remains the second largest party in the country’s parliament and a leading member of its right-wing coalition government).
Stenegard made the remarks in Copenhagen at a meeting of ministers from all five of the Nordic states. They agreed to far stronger cooperation in deporting bogus asylum seekers and foreigners without residence permits. If the other Nordic countries follow the Danish government’s policies, as they claim they intend, it could herald serious consequences.
The Danish government entered office intending to reduce the number of “asylum seekers” to zero. In 2020, the government revoked the residence permits of many Syrian “refugees” and deported them, arguing that the Damascus region was now relatively safe. Earlier this year, the Danish government declared more areas of Syria safe and deported even more. In July 2023, only 180 people applied for asylum in Denmark, with its population of 6 million, presumably because word has spread that you’ll need to be a genuine asylum seeker to succeed [Nordic states to tighten collaboration on migrant deportations, by Benjamin Bathke, Info Migrants, November 2, 2023].
At the Copenhagen meeting, the Nordic ministers agreed to three points:
It wasn’t long ago that “voluntary repatriation” was exclusively associated with Europe’s “Far Right” and was simply not to be spoken about by mainstream politicians. Now, we have the leaders of the five Nordic countries openly adopting a policy of “voluntary repatriation.”
(There’s an excellent series of articles on the concept of repatriation at the new White Papers Institute Substack, e.g. here.)
The “migrant” crime and behavior that led to this sea change in Denmark were set out by Denmark’s Social Democrat Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, before the Danish parliament in 2021, as the European Conservative’s Tomlinson reported above. “We cannot promise zero asylum seekers, but we can set out the vision that we also did before the elections, namely that we want a new asylum system and then we do what we can to introduce it,” she said:
One in five young men from non-Western backgrounds who were born in 1997 had breached the penal code before the age of 21. One in five. It’s nothing new, and that’s the problem: it’s been going on for too many years. Girls are called derogatory things because they are Danish. Or girls are subjected to social control because they have become too Danish. A sausage cart in Brønshøj is attacked with firecrackers because it sells pork.
But is it too little too late?
The birth rate of foreigners in the Nordic countries is much higher than that of the natives. Sweden provides an example. The birth rate is about 1.6 for real Swedes and about 1.9 for foreign women. Though foreign-born fertility has been declining, it is still higher than that of Swedes, as is the fertility of second-generation foreigners. (Good news is, Swedish fertility has increased slightly: Slight increase in childbearing among native-born women, Statistics Sweden, April 7, 2022.)
Surely, the next step must be for Nordic governments to come up with a plan to encourage their people to have at least two children, and preferably even more.
