In a recent attack on the Alt Right, libertarian writer Cathy Young took specific aim at my work on what we tag here at VDARE.com “Not Reporting Race” — the Main Stream Media custom of not reporting that a black, minority, or immigrant individual committed a crime, while always reporting when a black, minority, etc. is a victim of a crime. In it she wrote that
While mainstream media and liberal punditry can be overly skittish if not denialist on the subject, VDARE’s racialism not only reeks of hostility and contempt toward the presumed losers in the “biodiversity” lottery but veers into outright paranoia about cover-ups of crime’s racial angle.Thus, a post on a Bangladeshi-born and probably Muslim Canadian gynecologist accused of sexually assaulting patients speculates that his name, Mohammed Haque, was deliberately omitted from the headlines on news stories about his arrest. (Actually, nearly all recent stories about sexual assault charges against doctors named David Newman and Ian Hardy also left the suspects’ names out of the headlines.) [Emphasis added]
You Can’t Whitewash The Alt-Right’s Bigotry, The Federalist, April 14, 2016
What is this “actually?” Does Young mean that there’s some kind of rule that accused gynecologists’ names aren’t usually put in headlines?
In fact, Dr. Nikita Levy’s name has frequently appeared in headlines, and that gives you a false idea of his ethnic group. Dr. Levy (right) was a black immigrant from Jamaica, a fact that never appeared in a headline (unless the headline was written by me.)
The main thrust of my post was that a Bangladeshi immigrant doctor was referred to in seven headlines as a “Yorkton” or “Saskatchewan” doctor. That’s not the relevant factor here, and probably won’t cause women to avoid doctors from those areas.
If, however, every time a Bangladeshi Muslim doctor behaved badly, it was reported, women might avoid them. This would probably be a good idea — Bangladesh’s culture is very anti-woman. A recent UN report said that one in eight men in rural Bangladesh admit to having committed rape. If you’re thinking “Well, a graduate of Bangladesh’s medical school isn’t going to be that rural,” the rate in the cities of Bangladesh is 1 in 10. [PDF]
Here’s Young again complaining about VDARE.com:
Another item, on a Texas couple’s arrest for enslaving and abusing their Nigerian nanny, cavils that the Associated Press report waits too long to reveal the suspects’ own Nigerian background, allowing inattentive readers to assume they were racist rednecks — even though the second paragraph mentioned the couple’s distinctly non-redneck names, Chudy and Sandra Nsobundu.
Here Young insists on repeating the idea that the Nsobundus, were a “Texas couple” and their victim was a Nigerian, claiming there’s no significance to the fact that the headline of the AP story calls them a Texas couple, and in fact, they are revealed to be “naturalized U.S. citizens originally from Nigeria” in only paragraph 12. As I commented, that headline could just as easily have read “Nigerian Immigrants Charged With Enslaving Texas Woman.”
But it didn’t. I wonder why not?
Apparently Young has no idea about the Main Stream Media’s custom–set in writing in the AP Stylebook and many similar policies — of not reporting the race of a criminal in order to avoid making that race look bad. The MSM not what she calls “skittish” — they have a systematic policy of suppression which I've been covering here for 15 years.
The clear intent is to create a false consciousness in the news-reading public — and it works. The MSM supporters of this idea say that it’s meant to prevent “prejudice” — a Canadian stylebook, used by Toronto Globe & Mail, says:
We must be especially scrupulous about avoiding irrelevant references in stories about criminal charges or other matters in which identifying a person’s race or national origin may unfairly associate an entire group with criminal or antisocial activity.[Emphasis added.]
So the MSM gatekeepers don’t want people to “unfairly” get the idea that, say black people are more dangerous than whites. Unfortunately, this idea is perfectly fair, because it is true.
Political Correctness, says Steve Sailer, is a War On Noticing. “Not Reporting Race” is a War On The Truth.
Here’s a list of tropes used in the MSM’s War on the truth about race and crime.
A story in which one person shoots another person, and neither of them is named by race. It could be a black-on-black shooting, a black-on-white shooting, or an Indian Reservation shooting. The only case where race turns out to be “relevant” in MSM terms — a white-on-black shooting. Whenever I see a headline that says “Man Arrested For”, I have trained myself to wonder “What kind of man?” Ann Coulter’s devastating Chapter Nine in Adios America! covers this, and is titled PUBLIC WARNED TO BE ON LOOKOUT FOR “MAN”.
When a man named Hossein Zorkot was arrested in a park in Dearborn, Michigan for prowling in a park with a rifle, wearing black clothing, and with his face camouflaged, the headline in the local paper was: Man with AK-47 assault rifle arrested after leaving Dearborn’s Hemlock Park. [Dearborn Press & Guide, September 12, 2007] Zorkot was an Arab Muslim immigrant from Lebanon. All of that is relevant when you’re talking about guy being arrested for acting like a terrorist — especially if it happens on September 11. But none of that appeared in the story, only in blog items by people like me and JihadWatch.
In the case of the “Texas Couple”, you not only found out that they had weird names, but in Paragraph 12, that they were Nigerians. But they’re still a “Texas Couple” in the headline. This also happens with Indian slavers in America. (There has been more than one case.) Example: Woman gets 11 years in US jail for enslaving Indonesian maids, AFP, June 28, 2008. The Indonesian maid’s ethnic group is worth mentioning, her Indian enslaver (Varsha Mahender Sabhnani, right) is either “Woman” or “New York Millionaire”.
The Associated Press headline Texas couple guilty of enslaving Nigerian widow, San Diego Tribune, February 2, 2010 is not about the Nsobundus, but about another “Texas Couple” named Emmanuel and Ngozi Nnaji. (Slavery is apparently a common pattern with Nigerian immigrants.)
We learn their weird names, and that they themselves are “Nigerian-born” (there are many ways of not saying “immigrant” in these stories) in paragraph three, but the headline says that a Nigerian was enslaved by Texans. Of course, the victim, who spent nine years as their slave could also be called a “Texas woman”. But she isn’t.
A similar case: a murder by a Hispanic illegal in New York’s Chinatown. Headline: Mother of Yu Yao, Chinese immigrant killed in pipe attack, tries to charge accused killer in court, By Thomas Zambito, New York Daily News, June 1, 2010. The victim is an immigrant in the headline, but the accused killer, Mexican illegal Carlos Cruz, is not.
One story about Cruz did mention he was an immigrant:
Cruz, another immigrant pursuing the American Dream, blamed his troubles on the alcohol and crack cocaine that buoyed him during his forced separation from his wife and child in Mexico.” Mother confronts killer who brutally murdered her daughter with a metal pipe in random attack, By Thomas Zambito, NY Daily News, April 27, 2011 [Emphasis added]
That’s not even funny — that’s sick.
In two cases of Nigerian slavers above, one couple was referred “naturalized U.S. citizens originally from Nigeria”, the other was “Nigerian-born”. Wouldn’t it be more natural to refer to them as Nigerian immigrants?
Yes, it would. But criminals are almost never referred to by the term “immigrant” — even when immigration is the story.
For example, illegal immigrant, rapist, torturer, and murderer Humberto Leal was referred to as “Mexican national” in many stories about delays to his execution caused — see Humberto Leal Dies, A New Propaganda Ploy (“Mexican National”) Is Born.
The MSM also likes say that people (terrorists, illegal immigrants and Obama’s illegal Uncle Omar) “moved here” rather than immigrated.
This isn’t part of the same open conspiracy you can see in stylebooks — I think it’s instinctive. Immigrants can be the victims of crime, but no immigrant does anything wrong in a newspaper report, only “Dodge City Woman” and “Bell Gardens Man.”
It’s common to see MSM reports of wanted criminals that give every detail of their appearance except the color of their skin. This is the first thing police want to know in a description of a suspect, and they always release it in their official statements. But a lot of MSM reports cut it out.
The MSM will even apply this to reports on missing children. A liberal MSM reporter of my acquaintance told me that he personally favored not reporting the race of criminals in news reports, but he’d seen at least one case where the description he was supposed to put out of a missing child described her as having her hair in “corn rows”, leading him to ask “Is this child…black? Shouldn’t we say that?”
Finally, you can see how deliberate this is by how outraged the MSM becomes when this protocol is violated, even by hint. Alex Pareene (right)did an article for Salon called Matt Drudge’s disgusting race war awareness campaign.[June 1, 2011] when Drudge merely linked to headlines about the Flash Mob phenomenon without mentioning race.
When black gunman Vester Lee Flanagan killed two white colleagues on air, for explicitly racial reasons — he had decided they were “racist” — Breitbart headlined the story Race Murder in Virginia: Black Reporter Suspected of Executing White Colleagues on Live Television. This caused New York Magazine’s Jonathan Chait [Send him mail] to tweet “I’m too angry to be tweeting about these racist demagogues at Breitbart but I can’t contain myself right now…These are sick, hateful, twisted people who exploit our worst impulses, and they have real influence.”

That was after thousands of headlines about the Charleston Shooting that said things like Charleston, S.C., shooting: White gunman sought in killing of 9 at black church. [Associated Press, NOLA.com, June 18, 2015 ]
I don’t think it’s Breitbart who are “sick, hateful, twisted people” exploiting people’s “worst impulses”–I think it’s people like Chait, Barack Obama, and Eric Holder, who will attack white people for things they haven’t done, while covering up or excusing minority atrocities.
In Adios, America, Ann Coulter, whose research exposed the “Mexican Rapist” problem to, among others, Donald Trump, wrote this handy guide:
SECRET DECODER RING FOR IMMIGRANT CRIMESIt’s great living in America and having to interpret news stories as if we’re reading Pravda. Usually, the only way to tell if a crime story involves an immigrant is if:
- The crime involves a uniquely perverse sexual assault, such as gang rape, child rape, or incest;
- The rapist is shocked that anyone thinks he did something wrong;
- A woman is involved in the rape or the cover-up;
- The rapist’s name would not be found in a phonebook from the 1960s;
- Newspapers informatively refer to the rapist in their headlines as: “Man”
But those telltale signs allow only an educated guess that the perpetrator is an immigrant. To confirm it, one must search for words such as “ICE” or “translator.” In a way, we’re lucky immigrants don’t bother learning English, or the “translator” search wouldn’t work.
Since I decode these hidden crimes for a living, I’ve developed other techniques. Sometimes there’s a picture. Sometimes the criminal will claim the police have only charged him because he was black.(He’s black? Who knew!)
If someone is actually in prison, you can frequently look them up in the “Inmate Locator” search which will have their race listed. I used that technique here.
The simplest thing to start with is with the Archie Bunker question: “What kind of name is that anyhow?” A recent sad case makes that point — KTLA headlined it Man Arrested in Connection With Kidnapping and Death of 11-Year-Old Navajo Girl. [May 3, 2016]
A man was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday evening in connection with the kidnapping and death of an 11-year-old Navajo girl, whose body was found in the New Mexico desert.Authorities identified him as Tom Begaye, 27, but did not offer details as to a possible connection to the children. Begaye is scheduled to appear in U.S. Magistrate court Wednesday.
As usual, you see that the victim has an ethnicity that can be mentioned in the headline and story, but the accused doesn’t. He’s a “man.” However, years of MSM lying have accustomed me to ask myself “what kind of ‘man’?” I asked myself “What kind of name is Begaye?” And I remembered, oddly enough, that as recently as May 3, I’d been posting a Michelle Malkin column about what the EPA did to the Navajo Nation, and she quoted the President of the Navajo Nation, Russell Begaye.
So Begaye is a Navajo name, and the headline above could just as easily say Navajo Arrested in Connection With Kidnapping and Death of 11-Year-Old Girl.
But it never will, because of the MSM conspiracy of lies — lies that self-proclaimed “libertarian” Cathy Young is eager to support with the usual vile abuse.
