Re: Brenda Walker’s Blog: Pre-Pencil Immigrant Diversity
I wonder if Guzzardi, an English as a Second Language instructor, has ever had to actually show his students how to hold a pencil like the teachers noted in Walker’s blog?
The most alarming statistic in Walker’s post is this:
"According to the Migration Policy Institute, the number of foreign-born adults with less than a fifth-grade education increased 25 percent from 1.74 million immigrants in 1990 to 2.18 million in 2000. It then dipped 2 percent to 2.12 million immigrants in 2006."
This just confirms that we all must work even harder to change our immigration laws now.
Thanks to VDARE.COM, more people are becoming aware of the issues.
And yes, I've happily sent in my contribution a few days ago.
Guzzardi replies: No, I've never had to teach pencil skills. But many students have only the most rudimentary cursive writing ability. And a large percentage of have had little if any classroom experience that contributes heavily to their inability to learn…or, worse, to want to learn.
