Re: Steve Sailer’s Blog: A Triumph of Assimilation
From the Associated Press story Steve Sailer that wrote about in his blog:
"'Aspirations for higher education are very strong among Hispanics, but there is a yawning discrepancy between aspirations and actual attainment,' said Richard Fry, an education researcher at the Pew Hispanic Center. [87 % of Hispanics Value Higher Education; 13 % Have College Degree, by Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar and Trevor Tompson, Associated Press, July 30, 2010]
This is the same old annoying tripe. Sure, "aspirations" are high. Ask Hispanic students and their parents if they value education and the immediate reply is "Yes, it’s the most important thing."
But the same students can’t turn their reports in on time or make an effort to get an afternoon tutor.
As for the parents, they never have time to follow up on a suggestion that they volunteer in the classroom. I don’t know why — most aren’t working.
To those Hispanic students who the system is loaded against them, I recommend they stop looking for excuses and start working harder.
