Re: Joe Guzzardi’s Column: VDARE.COM Vindicated As Baseball 2010 Looms: Experts Urge Developing American Talent

Dominican-born Alex Rodriguez is the highest paid player in Major League Baseball with an annual salary of $27.5 million.

Is that what Torii Hunter referred to when he said that Dominicans will work for "a bag of chips"?

Joe Guzzardi replies: A point of clarification. Rodriquez was born in Washington Heights, a Dominican-dominated section of upper Manhattan. New York. With his family, Rodriquez returned to the Dominican Republic during his early childhood. Then the family moved again to the Miami area where Rodriguez developed his baseball skills.

Torii Hunter is correct, however. Dominicans sign for less money than American players. Once they get to the big leagues, if their performance warrants it, then like Rodriquez they will earn tens of millions of dollars. But for baseball owners, the startup cost to sign Dominican players is lower.
