According to a story in the Orlando Sentinel, Florida leads America in the most cases of food-related illnesses affecting people who have eaten out. The leading causes of food poisoning are ethnic food, sea food and all-you-can eat buffets.

The website Healthinspections.com reported that Florida, with 29,729 restaurants, had 77 separate outbreaks of food-borne illness affecting 300 people during 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available. You can check your hometown on the website by entering your zip code.

Since immigrants make up such a large percentage of the employees in food service industry, especially in the kitchen, it is not hard to draw a connection.

If you are a snowbird who regularly visits Florida in the winter, maybe you should rethink your plans.

Don’t go to California either. It is the state with the second most number of food-related illnesses.
