Re: James Kirkpatrick’s article Derbyshire, Weissberg, And Dog-Whistling: Conservatism Inc’s Uneasy Balancing Act

From: Kathy Knechtges

I applaud the James Kirkpatrick article "Conservative Inc.’s Uneasy Balancing Act" as one of the most visionary of this cutting-edge web-zine.

I agree that the economic welfare of middle and working class whites has been ignored by the elites of both Liberalism and Conservatism. Economic opportunity for these groups is a key to making conservatism a winning political movement again.

This often quoted letter by Dwight Eisenhower is along the same lines:

"This is what I mean by my constant insistence upon "moderation" in government. Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again … . There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. … Their number is negligible and they are stupid."[Letter to Edgar Newton Eisenhower, ?November 8, 1954 ]

Eisenhower could see that the upward mobility of the majority of America’s workers was not a political, but an American idea.

The massive downward mobility, and the loss of wages and benefits for America’s average workers are huge problems that must be addressed or they will take our whole civilization down with them.

Again, bravo!
