Re: National Data, By Edwin S. Rubenstein | Lesson From 1965: More Immigrants = More Violent Crime
From: An Anonymous Researcher
By Edwin S. Rubenstein's recent piece on immigrant crime reminded me of a report that I had seen from the Department of Justice attributing more than 4,000 murders to Jamaican immigrant gang members during the years 1985 — 1992. [Urban Street Gang Enforcement Bureau of Justice Assistance Monograph, January 1997 [PDF] Typical of the violence from this particular immigrant group were the following incidents of Immigrant Mass Murder:
- The Nickel Murders in 1984, where five people including a pregnant woman were shot inside a crack house in Miami [Vivian Blake, 54, Founder of Jamaica Drug Gang, Dies, By Liz Robbins, NYT, Published: March 25, 2010]
- The Fire Department Benevolent Association shooting in 1985, where bullets were sprayed at the crowd at a Fort Lauderdale dance party, killing the DJ and seriously wounding three bystanders. [Murder Suspect Already Killed 5,By Lisa J. Huriash, South Florida Sun Sentinel, July 27, 2001]
- The Taste of the Islands Massacre in 1992, where four people were killed and twenty seriously wounded in a shooting inside a crowded Dade County nightclub. Suspect In Massacre Waives Extradition | Four Died In '92 Attack In North Dade County, By Ardy Friedberg South Florida Sun Sentinel, September 3, 1997
Rubenstein pointed out that the government irresponsibly fails to keep track of immigrant crime statistics.
Compounding the problem is the fact that the media consistently downplays or ignores the nationality and immigration status of criminals. I suspect that there are many more mass murders that could be attributed to Jamaicans in particular and immigrants in general if anyone bothered to keep track of such things.
