Back in the late 1980s, early 1990s, at San Quentin

San Quentin prison, black guards would tie blue or red bandanas on their batons, indicating their gang affiliation, Red = Bloods, Blue = Crips. The Mexican guards didn’t show colors, but they hated the whites just as much as the black guards. The "white" guards didn’t do anything for the whites, but the colored guards, black and brown, all cut slack for their peeps.

Just as in the outside, whites don’t stick together and are quick to stab each other in the back.
