A quiet storm brewing under radar will pit populist grassroots conservatives against Powers That Be RINOs at this week’s California Republican Party (CRP) Convention.(February 22-24) At stake is the leadership — and possible game-changing direction — of the state’s and nation’s Republican party. Populists fervently support Millennial conservative Travis Allen, a rare Republican in the California State Assembly (2012-18) who stands on the right side of conservative issues (anti-sanctuary statewide, anti-California 12 cent per gallon gas tax, pro-voter ID, pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, etc.).
Allen’s strong bid in the 2018 Gubernatorial race greatly concerned long-time Democrat politician, strategist and commentator Willie Brown, who publicly called Allen, "…the greatest threat to the Democratic front runner, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom." (Brown and others compare Allen’s straight-shooting, off-the-cuff style to Trump.)
A California Republican Preference Poll found likely Republican voters chose Allen 77% of the time over other Republican gubernatorial candidates, but Allen’s bid ended abruptly when Pres. Trump inexplicably endorsed RINO John Cox, who lost the race to Gavin Newsom, 62%-38%.
Allen’s current bid for CRP President is being challenged by insider Jessica Patterson, statewide field director for eBay flip-flopper Meg Whitman’s disastrous $150 million 2010 gubernatorial bid, and campaign worker for leftist Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. (A third candidate is political commentator Steve Frank.) Patterson is CEO of California Trail Blazers, an organization widely viewed as promoting “moderate” Republicans (including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy) while opposing populist conservative candidates and causes. In a shrewd, take-no-prisoners campaign reminiscent of Hillary Clinton’s “Super Delegate” strategy, Patterson has gained the support of titled Republicans while avoiding grassroots voters as she pursues proxy voting strategies to neutralize Allen’s supporters. California conservatives need to step up to the plate and beat back what one Allen supporter dubs the Oligarchy of Controlled Failure.
