I feel pretty confident in saying if George Washington were here today, he would actually want them to remove the plaque, because he would not want to be associated with those people.

On another issue of whitewashing history, it seems the whole "tear down the statues" movement is not really a bad thing. What it does is make the public spaces reflect the reality of Current Year American culture, government and corporate ideologies — therefore making it obvious to the dispossessed who may be sleeping that, yes, you have been displaced and having a few statues does not change that fact.
