By Robert deBrus says that in his article that the Confederate Battle Flag was “still acceptable as a Clinton-Gore symbol in 1992.“
However, that Clinton-Gore campaign button with the Confederate flag on it wasn’t official campaign memorabilia. Even in 1992, the Dems wouldn’t have used Confederate imagery, at least not officially. That may not have been made under the auspices of the national Democratic party, but it was made by a white Democratic voter.
That’s kind of the point I made in my 2015 blog post Clinton-Gore: In The 90s, The Democratic Party Put Two White Male Southerners In The White House.
As late as 2003, Vermonter Howard Dean expressed a desire to be “the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks,“ because, he said “We can’t beat George Bush unless we appeal to a broad cross-section of Democrats“ — after which he was immediately condemned by all Goodthinkful people... and Jesse Jackson.
