The Atlantic has a big article trying to "explain" why Japanese kids can walk to school, and American kids can’t.

I can explain it — Japan has no blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, or judges turning loose child molesters. I walked to school alone, as did most children, when the U.S. was white.
