Re: Joe Guzzardi’s Column: Another Thing American Kids Can’t Do…Play Tennis?

Guzzardi’s column about the dearth of Americans in collegiate tennis is excellent. Not enough has been said about the discrimination against American high-school grads that want to play college.

Here’s how it works: If you are an American kid hoping for a university tennis scholarship, you must never have accepted prize money for any sporting endeavor.

The NCAA is so strict they have banned kids that did nothing more than giving a few tennis lessons during the summer.

Foreign tennis players, however, aren’t held to the same standards of amateurism. When they go back home, many of them earn cash by playing pro-tournaments or by giving instruction as a tennis-pro. The NCAA turns a blind eye to this even though everyone knows it happens.

As a result, we now have 22-year-old second tier professionals from Europe, Asia, and Australia competing for scholarships with our 17-18 year-old high-school graduates. They take a limited number of valuable scholarships away from American amateurs.

In last year’s NCAA tournament over half the tennis players were foreign.

The foreigners are more than happy to come here and milk our scholarship programs because they aren’t good enough to compete on the pro-circuit and colleges in their native countries don’t offer tennis scholarships.

Universities actively discriminate against American kids in favor of foreign semi-professionals because, as Guzzardi pointed out, they want to win at any cost.

American taxpayers subsidize foreign tennis pros that use our facilities and our coaching and then end up playing against us — and often winning — in international competition.

University tennis programs are another example of globalism run amok.
