From: The Dubuque Observer
The first stage of the Agriprocessors' trial is complete.
In 2008, the kosher meat packing plant in Postville was raided by ICE for its employment violations. Specifically, Agriprocessors hired hundreds of illegal aliens.
Last week, a jury in Sioux Falls, South Dakota found former Agriprocessors Inc. vice president Sholom Rubashkin guilty on 86 (of 91) felony fraud counts related to falsified sales records as well as bank, wire and mail fraud. [Guilty Verdict in Agriprocessors Case, UPI.com, November 13, 2009]
In December, immigration charges will be addressed.
Former Agriprocessors' supervisor Carlos Guerrero-Espinoza has already testified that the plant scrambled to get workers new identification documents the night before a massive immigration raid.
Guerrero-Espinoza said that managers provided new but fraudulent permanent resident cards to 20 employees the night before the May 2008 raid in which nearly 400 workers were arrested.
According to Guerrero-Espinoza, the cards were manufactured in Minneapolis in anticipation of the raid which occurred a week later. [Supervisor: Plant Workers Given Immigration Cards, Associated Press, October 29, 2009]
