Re: James Fulford’s Blog: Irish President Speaks To Congress; Asks For Legalization

I've been fascinated watching Bertie Ahern, the president of the Republic of Ireland, lobbying the U.S. Congress and bleating for amnesty.

My forebears emigrated from Ireland in the 1830s and settled in Alabama. We always thought ourselves more Confederate than Irish, since my great grandfather fought with an Alabama regiment under Stonewall Jackson’s command in the War of Northern Aggression.

Anyway, prior to the 1965 Immigration Act, the Irish quota always went unfilled, one of the reasons cited for changing the law.

Today’s carping illegal Irish would have had no problem getting in under the immigration guidelines that the 1965 act changed.

Ahern can thank their fellow Sen. Ted Kennedy (and others like him) for giving preference to the Third World immigrants over Europeans like the Irish.

Crowley’s previous letter about easily offended Hispanics and their Cinco de Mayo celebration is here.
