George Borjas Notes An Immigration Irony

Re: Mexico To Cubans — "Mi Casa No Es Su Casa"
In the early years of Castro’s rule, Cubans who fled into the Mexican embassy (for their very lives, firing squads awaited them outside) were extorted shamelessly by Mexican diplomats. Many of these swine became wealthy from the racket. Nowadays there’s nothing to extort from Cuban asylum-seekers — so the decision is easy. Castaneda turns them OUT!
The Mexican and Castroite kleptocracies have cooperated from day one. They have much in common. That wealth might be earned rather than stolen or extorted has never occurred to either. Recall the title of Evelyn Waugh’s book on the glorious Mexican state in the 1930’s: "Robbery Under Law." As they say: birds of a feather … ..
But here’s the most nauseating implication of this sorry and (totally predictable) embassy episode: that any Cuban would prefer to live in Mexico than in Cuba! You never saw that pre-Castro, believe me. Indeed, far from what Castro and his Beltway and Academic amen-corner say and write, pre-Castro Cuba had a higher standard of living than Belgium and Italy in 1958, and experienced net immigration.
That’s where the antipathy of the Mexican press and government toward Cuban-Americans stems from; it’s an inferiority complex. They feel much more comfortable with Cuban Communists — the thieves and cutthroats who turned Cuba into a pesthole even worse than their own.
