Anthropologist A.L. Kroeber, Franz Boas’s First Ph.D. Student, Is UN-Named By Berkeley

In the Bay Area, the Year Zero’s un-namings grind on. While San Francisco today un-named Abraham Lincoln High School, UC Berkeley

un-named Kroeber Hall, which had been named for one-time liberal hero Alfred L. Kroeber (1876-1970), the holder of the first ever Anthropology doctorate granted by Franz Boas’s department at Columbia U.

Kroeber’s daughter was the late liberal sci-fi writer Ursula K. LeGuin (1929-2016).
