AP Stylebook: People With Frenchness

We recommend avoiding general and often dehumanizing “the” labels such as the poor, the mentally ill, the French, the disabled, the college-educated. Instead, use wording such as people with mental illnesses. And use these descriptions only when clearly relevant.

OK, everybody, you got the message: “the French” don’t exist anymore. Now there are just people with Frenchness.

Same with “whites.” They are now people with whiteness. So when the Diversity Inclusion Equity movement says “Abolish whiteness,” they don’t mean abolish white people, just what makes them white, like their home equity.
