Barry Switzer, former Oklahoma Sooners and Dallas Cowboys coach, said in an interview that “I’ve always said I’d never recruit a white quarterback. The only way I’d ever recruit a white quarterback to play for me was if his mom and daddy would have to both be black, and that’s the only way I would do it. " Barry Switzer: 'I've always said I'd never recruit a white quarterback' Nina Mandell, USA Today.
Contrast that with what happened to Rush Limbaugh over his Donovan McNabb comment a decade ago. And Limbaugh was only discussing one quarterback, while Switzer was making a blanket statement about all quarterbacks of the white race.
What if a coach or former coach or prospective coach were to say "I've always said I'd never recruit a black quarterback." Just imagine the outcry! And yet, Switzer can say this.
