California’s Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and I share history. We both finished behind Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 2003 Recall Gray Davis election. But since then, Bustamante has been all but invisible. No one has any idea what he does all day long. Insiders swear he is running for state insurance commissioner. Yesterday, in a press conference, Schwarzenegger denounced death threats alledgedly made against Bustamante and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
I listened to the conference live and heard this interesting exchange:
Reporter: "Governor, how is Bustamante holding up in light of these threats?"
Schwarzenegger: "You know, I don’t know."
Apparently, even Bustamante’s boss has no interest in how his number two man spends his day. If Schwarzenegger didn’t bother to ask after Bustamante, how much could he care about him?
