A couple things struck me about Lance Welton’s fascinating piece on the genetic background of Britons.
One was that Queen Charlotte was descended from Moor named Madragana, which I had not known.
The second was this:
Gangs of male invaders had entered England, taken over parts of or all of it and interbred with the local girls. Females, being genetically predisposed to be attracted to status and wealth in males (because these qualities mean they and their offspring will be better looked after) were likely perfectly happy to cast off their co-ethnic boyfriends in favour of these powerful invaders.
Mr. Welton immediately reminded me of these words (quoted in Burke Davis’s biography) from Gen. Chesty Puller, a five-time recipient of the Navy Cross:
Our country won’t go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won’t be any America — because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.
Enough said.
