Despite Crackdown, Some Illegal Aliens Aren’t Being Arrested

Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Thomas Homan has said the gloves are off on illegal immigration. ICE seems to be underperforming; is this deliberate? The reality is much different. ICE has a schizophrenic attitude to illegal aliens, and this is not about those in hiding.

This is about illegal aliens who are quite open about their status and openly agitate against immigration law enforcement. One of those public illegal aliens is Antonia Alvarez, who appears to have some sort of immunity from the immigration laws of the United States.

For thousands of people living in the United States, the immigration debate is not a political issue, but a matter of personal survival. For Antonia Alvarez, it’s also a question of what will happen to her children.

Alvarez, an undocumented immigrant, entered the United States 16 years ago. At the time she fled, she said cartel-linked criminals had been attacking her employees in her decoration-making business in Mexico City.

Alvarez, 47, now lives in New Brighton, Minnesota, with her four children — three of whom are recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and face possible deportation if the Obama-era policy is rescinded.

And she is quite flagrant about it, even harassing members of Congress.
Alvarez, who runs a house-cleaning business by day, is known in her community as an outspoken leader of the activist group La Asamblea de Derechos Civiles de Minnesota, which translates to Civil Rights Assembly of Minnesota, a grassroots organization that advocates for undocumented immigrants …

I’m an undocumented woman, but I’m not a criminal.

Alvarez said she is open about her undocumented status during demonstrations, even to police.

“I am not embarrassed because I don’t have papers," she told ABC News. "I put my face in the front."

And she knows the game well — she and others like her know that ICE, despite the claims by Homan that all illegal aliens are subject to arrest, will not arrest her because of the threat of bad publicity.

She believes the visibility provides some layer of protection because authorities know there would be media attention and community backlash if they arrested her. That’s why Alvarez encourages other undocumented immigrants to openly stand up for themselves, as well. (Steve Sailer notes an exception to this rule here.)

Here’s Homan laying down the law for California. He is talking the talk:

But will he walk the walk? Many illegal aliens, such as Alvarez, know Homan at least appears to be all talk. If Homan isn’t talk as he promises, let Alex Khu, Special Agent-in-Charge of ICE Homeland Security Investigations know about this arrogant illegal alien and ask why he hasn’t acted.
