Black journalist Juan Williams has just been fired by National Public Radio for saying this to Bill O'Reilly on the air:"Look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."Indeed, it’s a little hard to categorize Williams as a "bigot", i.e., someone who would take the side of whites in a racial dispute. He may have thought — like Rick Sanchez — that his own race gave him a longer leash to be honest about things. Nope.
NPR has long been a parody of its brittle, hypersensitive, left-wing snotball self. When Terry Gross interviews Mark Potok about white racism followed by Michele Norris complaining about white racism followed by Robert Siegel sounding the alarm about white racism capped off by an in-depth report on the endangered Yellow-Tailed Lickspittle of the forests of Guatemala, nine days in a row, it’s time to pull the plug.
Congress should de-fund NPR immediately. I was listening to NPR on occasion for "monitoring the enemy" purposes, but I’m losing the stomach for even that.
