George Will's tribute to Gene McCarthy includes this:
The case against New Hampshire’s primary is that its power is disproportionate for a state so unrepresentative of America’s demographic complexities. The case for New Hampshire can be put in a name: Gene McCarthy. The small state gives an unknown underdog challenger, practicing retail politics, a fighting chance. The Poet Who Took On LBJ
May I say that McCarthy’s is not the first name that springs to my mind when I think of New Hampshire?
But what does Mr. Will mean when he says "unrepresentative of America’s demographic complexities.?"
Quick, the Census! Oh, I see. New Hampshire is 95 percent white. Can’t have that, can we?
