Today, September 29, as you will be aware from scanning the Main Stream Media, is Michaelmas — the Feast of Michael and All Angels.
Actually, you might not be aware of it. As I write this, there are only about 11,000 results for "Michaelmas" in Google News, compared to some 8,220,000 results for "Rosh Hashanah" — the Jewish New Year, which lasts from this evening until the evening of October 1.
This imbalance is particularly striking because Michaelmas is deeply rooted in the Anglosphere. It was traditionally a Quarter Day when rent was paid universities and law courts began their fall terms. In the U.S., it is also when a "Blue Mass" is held by the Roman Catholic Church to honor police and firefighters, e.g., Baltimore Police Officers Celebrate ‘Blue Mass’ Sunday With Baltimore Archbishop, by Max McGee, CBS Baltimore, September 29, 2019.
However, Google News currently reports only about 13,800 results for "Blue Mass."
It has now become a multicultural must to step on Christmas by never mentioning it except in connection with other “holidays,” notably Hanukkah, aptly described by American Heritage's Frederic Schwarz (December 2000) as the “Jewish Kwanzaa.”
Somehow, however, the MSM neglects to provide the nearest Saint’s day in the Christian calendar to each year’s Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Passover — there are a lot of saints! So it has become a VDARE.com service (as so often) to fill the gap.
St. Michael’s Day has coincided with these Jewish festivals several times, for example here and here and here.
I note that in 2008, Democrats insisted that Congress close over the festival despite the financial crisis, just as they are currently insisting that Congress close despite the supposedly imperative need to impeach Orange Man Bad.
St. Michael the Archangel is seen as a warrior, the patron saint of soldiers, police and doctors, and is usually portrayed with a sword. He is invoked for protection, especially from lethal enemies:
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
Unlike the unpleasant War On Christmas perpetrators, VDARE.COM wishes all our readers a Blessed Day. We mean it.
