Earlier: Happy Allen Francis Gardiner Day! Oh, And Also Rosh Hashanah
Happy St Cyprian of Carthage Day! He was Bishop of Carthage in modern Tunis, North Africa, martyred in 258 A.D. September 15 is his feast day in my star-crossed Episcopalian church; September 16 in Lydia’s beleaguered Catholic Church. This means it neatly covers Yom Kippur, which last from sundown September 15 to sundown September 16.
It has now become a multicultural must to step on Christmas by never mentioning it except in connection with other “holidays,” notably Hanukkah, aptly described by American Heritage’s Frederic Schwarz (December 2000) as the “Jewish Kwanzaa.” Somehow, however, the MSM neglects to provide the nearest Saint’s day in the Christian calendar to each year’s Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Passover — there are a lot of saints!
So it has become a VDARE.com service (as so often) to fill the gap.
St. Cyprian is particularly interesting in the light of current events. He was a Berber — as, a century later, was St. Augustine — that is, a member of the distinctive North African indigenous group that was overwhelmed if not obliterated by the invading Arabs. What has been obliterated, of course, is their once-deep Christianity. North Africa was Christian for perhaps three times as long as the U.S. has been in existence. Not only is the Great Replacement a fact rather than a theory, but it has historical precedent.
Additionally, the central reality of St. Cyprian’s life was the persecutions periodically launched by the Roman authorities. These generally took the form of demanding public conformity to Roman rites (Jews, interestingly, were often exempt). You don’t have to be Michelle Malkin to see a similar fervor in the current weird Ruling Class zeal for demanding public submission to what is undeniably an untried vaccine for a modestly lethal disease; or in the extraordinary persecution of law-abiding thought criminals like Nick Fuentes and Lauren Witzke (and for that matter, VDARE.com).
The current American communist persecution already has real victims and martyrs. Of course we haven’t yet seen anything quite as stark as proconsul Galerius Maximus’ interrogation of St. Cyprian. But, especially given what a prison sentence now means, it’s coming:
Galerius Maximus: "Are you Thascius Cyprianus?"
Cyprian: "I am."
Galerius: "The most sacred Emperors have commanded you to conform to the Roman rites."
Cyprian: "I refuse."
Galerius: "Take heed for yourself."
Cyprian: "Do as you are bid; in so clear a case I may not take heed."
Galerius, after briefly conferring with his judicial council, with much reluctance pronounced the following sentence…"It is the sentence of this court that Thascius Cyprianus be executed with the sword."
Cyprian: "Thanks be to God.”
