Happy St. Francis Day! My three little Papist daughters with Lydia took Gerald, the Eastern Box turtle they’ve captured and have lovingly imprisoned, to be blessed at her Catholic church down in the valley below the castle today. I worry if that’s enough to ensure he survives the winter and am quietly campaigning for his release and replacement by a hypoallergenic kitten. Wish me, and Gerald, luck!
St. Francis is, of course, the patron saint of animals (and turtles), as well as ecology, merchants and Italy. His life story, like that of St. Paul, is a case of late conversion and what can only be described as an extraordinary hunger for God that speaks to the cultural grip Christianity had achieved in medieval Europe. As an extremely bitter dispossessed Episcopalian, I am interested to note he has adherents among Protestants. Of course, his lasting legacy is the Franciscan religious order — more accurately, orders. But he also reportedly set up the first known Christmas creche — interesting to us at VDARE.com because of our long and loving coverage of the current War On Christmas.
Oh, and it’s also Yom Kippur [Statement by President Joe Biden on Yom Kippur, October 4, 2022].
Yom Kippur as of 9:48 pm ET has 30, 800,000 results on Google News vs. 11, 800, 000 for St. Francis.
It has become a multicultural must to step on Christmas by never mentioning it except in connection with Hanukkah and other “holidays.“ Somehow, however, the MSM neglects to provide the nearest Saint’s day in the Christian calendar to each year’s Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Passover — there are a lot of saints! So it has become a VDARE.com service (as so often) to fill the gap.
We wish a Happy to all our readers. We mean it.
