Linda Thom’s piece today on the experience of immigration patriot Craig Keller picking apples in Washington State says that " apples, of course, do need to be picked. This can hardly be a surprise to the farmers.". Indeed.
W. S. Gilbert, who wrote the words to the Gilbert And Sullivan operettas, is supposed to have written a letter to an English railway company saying "Saturday afternoon, although occurring at regular and well-foreseen intervals, always takes this railway by surprise."
This sentiment is expressed in signs in print shops all over America saying "Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part."
Obviously, this applies particularly strongly to farmers — farming is all about advance planning. The crops did not get in the ground by accident, they were deliberately planted there, and harvest season happens at the same time every year.
If farmers fail to plan for a legal way to pick their crops, then they're planning to have them picked illegally. As I've pointed out before, this isn’t free enterprise, it’s organized crime.
