He Was Deported How Many Times???

I was reading an article about a man in Huntington, West Virginia who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for illegal entry into the United States.

On the one hand, I was thrilled that we appeared to be doing something about this problem. On the other hand, eighteen months in prison seemed a steep sentence. Why could we not just deport him?

Then I read the rest of the story…

"Jorge Leonel Marrufo-Sarinana, 33, of Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, previously had pleaded guilty to illegally entering the U.S. He also had been previously removed from the U.S. after a felony conviction, according to the release.

"On July 28, Marrufo-Sarinana was apprehended by CSX railroad police in Huntington. U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials determined that Marrufo was an illegal alien who had been apprehended 17 times since 1996 at the U.S./Mexican border or within the U.S.

"He had been removed from the United States on four prior occasions and was convicted in New Mexico of a felony offense of illegal reentry." [Man sentenced for being illegal alien The [Huntington, WV] Herald Dispatch, 12/23/04]

So…18 months in prison may not be so steep!
