Hispanic Teen Gangrape In Richmond, California

The rape of a "California teen" by four other California teens has had some media attention because bystanders did nothing to help.

The shocking gang rape of a 15-year-old San Francisco-area girl was awful enough. But what has shaken even veteran cops is the complete lack of remorse shown by at least some of the suspects arrested in the case.

It’s "disgusting" and "the worst thing I’ve heard of," Richmond Detective Ken Greco, who has been on the force for 29 years, was quoted in The San Francisco Chronicle.

The victim was found semiconscious beneath a picnic table after being brutalized by up to 10 suspects for about two hours. "She was raped, beaten, robbed and dehumanized by several suspects who were obviously okay enough with it to behave that way in each other’s presence," police Lt. Mark Gagan told the Chronicle.

"What makes it even more disturbing is the presence of others," Gagan said. "People came by, saw what was happening and failed to report it."

"This just gets worse and worse the more you dig into it," Gagan told CNN. "It was like a horror movie after looking at the evidence. I can’t believe not one person felt compelled to help her."

The Chronicle reported that five suspects are in custody after police picked up three people Tuesday night. But investigators think there were as many as 10 assailants, ranging in age from 15 to their early 20s. The young men laughed and shot photos as they took turns assaulting the girl, police said.[Police detectives shocked at remorseless suspects in gang rape of San Francisco-area girl, 15 By Adam Sommers, New York Daily News, October 28th 2009]

They've arrested several young men, some of whom are juveniles that can’t be named, but the ones who can be named are Manuel Ortega, 19 (pictured above right) and 21-year-old Salvador Rodriguez of Richmond. While Richmond, California is only 26 percent Hispanic, Richmond High School is 78 percent Hispanic, 2 percent white. Student Ethnicity
