Immigration Issue Surfaces In Long Island Politics

It’s always fascinated me that politicians (and their journalist groupies) are able to avoid incorrect issues like immigration even when it’s red hot in their own districts. For example, Bryanna Bevens tells me that her boss never actually said anything at all about the Hmong problem in Fresno (see her story tonight). However, Suffolk County (NY) Executive Steve Levy seems to be an exception to that rule. And, according to a horrified story in the New York Times, he may symbolize immigration’s emergence as a political issue. (Clash on Immigrants Is Gaining Political Force, by Patrick Healey, New York Times, November 29, 2004).
