Breaking News: Immigration Patriot Nathan Deals WINS in Georgia.
With 99% of the votes counted, Nathan Deal is leading Karen Handel by less than 3,000 votes in the run off for the GOP nomination for Governor in Georgia.
Deal has stopped short of declaring victory, but if he holds on to the lead, it will be a huge coup for the patriotic immigration reform bill.

Along with Tom Tancredo, Virgil Goode, and Steve King; Nathan Deal was the most reliable anti-mass immigration vote in Congress.
Deal was the number one leader in the House against birthright citizenship, introducing a bill to end it every year.
During his 17 years in Congress,Numbers USA Gave him 230 positive actions, and only 5 negative actions. These blips were for minor increases in seasonal labor.
This does not make him one of the “legal si, illegal no” types, as he was one of only 11 co-sponsors to the Tancredo moratorium bill. Deal co-sponsored 13 bills to end birthright citizenship, and was the primary sponsor of a bill every Congress since 2003.
Roy Beck gives a thorough rundown of Deal’s record in Congress here.
Put simply, we can trust Deal to enact tough laws on the state level. It is imperative that another state pass an Arizona style law.
While Arizonans support the law, they are getting very weary of being the focus of attention, and if no one else does the same I suspect they will eventually be broken down just like they were when they were the only state not to have the Martin Luther King Holiday. Having another state pass the law will.
While plenty of gubernatorial candidates claim to support it, Deal is someone who will truly fight for it.
Secondly, Deal has used his opposition to anchor babies as a major theme in his campaign from the beginning, so I would not surprised to see him push for a state law to deal with birthright citizenship.
Additionally, this is a case of running as a restrictionist paid off on a statewide election. Two weeks before the primary, Deal was in a distant Third Place. He focused his campaign on his tough record against immigration and received last minute endorsements from Tom Tancredo and Virgil Goode.
After the runoff, Bay Buchanan, Team America PAC, and SB 1070 author Russell Pearce endorsed him.
There were other issues at work. Deal received some establishment support from Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich and questions about Handel’s position on abortion and homosexuality were no doubt a factor, but Deal would not have even been competitive were it not for his strong positions on immigration.
Handel received endorsements from both Sarah Palin — who came into Atlanta to campaign for her yesterday, and Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.
These women are the two people most responsible for McCain’s strong lead against JD Hayworth by giving him pseudo conservative and restrictionist credentials.
Having a strong immigration reform patriot like Deal defeat the Palin candidate is a huge victory.
