Letter writer Dave Shanken wrote (11/26/2011):
The Pilgrims were invading the territory of the Americans, just as today’s immigrants are invading America.
This won’t do.
The land mass we refer to today as "North America" was known as "Turtle Island" to some of the tribes that were living on it before the Europeans' arrivals.
This land certainly wasn’t what anyone means by "America" until those Europeans came and transplanted their civilization into what was, for them, a wilderness.
So we might say that the Pilgrims invaded the territory of the Turtle Islanders, but surely not "the territory of the Americans."
