The New York Times story I linked to below, about illegals losing their jobs at Pomona College, has the story of "Carmen, 30, who asked that her last name not be used for fear of alerting immigration officials". She says that until recently, when Pomona, after 11 years of employing her illegally, started checking documents, she was earning, illegally, $17 an hour.
She and her husband bought a modest home in nearby Pomona this fall and moved in just two weeks before she was fired.
“I really don’t know what I am going to do,” she said, adding that her options were to look for work that paid in cash or move back to Mexico with her 2-year-old son [emphasis added] while her husband, an American citizen, stayed here.

You know what that sounds like to me? Self-deportation, that’s what it sounds like.
