Fourteen senators had the courage to stand up to the latest expansion of H-1b visas. What is interesting to me as VDARE.COM’s house progressive is that most of them were Democrats — and that as a group their tendency to support immigration restriction was barely greater than the congressional average:Senator | Party-State | ABI-Grade | Percentage-Grade |
Akaka | (D-HI) | C | 46% |
Byrd | (D-WV) | A+ | 95% |
Dayton | (D-MN) | C | 55% |
Dodd | (D-CT) | D+ | 34% |
Dorgan | (D-ND) | C | 54% |
Durbin | (D-IL) | D | 27% |
Feingold | (D-WI) | D- | 17% |
Inhofe | (R-OK) | B+ | 84% |
Jeffords | (I-VT) | B- | 66& |
Landrieu | (D-LA) | C+ | 58 |
Rockefeller | (D-WV) | C | 50% |
Sessions | (R-AL) | A | 92% |
Stabenow | (D-MI) | C | 55% |
Vitter | (R-LA) | A | 94% |
Notably absent from the list was Republican Senator Lamar Alexander. In 2002 he raised H-1b expansion as a campaign issue.
Tennessee Candidate for Senator Lamar Alexander made a video that strongly criticizes H-1B and attacks his opponent, Ed Bryant, for voting for H-1B. Lamar said that, "On May 20, 1998, Ed Bryant voted to allow U.S. companies to lay-off American workers to hire foreign workers."[Lamar Alexander Attacks H-1B on Video 8/6/2002 H-1B News, Zazona.com]
Now, in 2005, Alexander turned around and did the same thing — and in his case he can’t plead ignorance.
What is it about the Senate that turns men into cowards, whores and hypocrites? Sounds to me like the US needs serious election reform and publicly funded elections.
