The white sheriff of Ingham County, which includes most of Lansing, Michigan, dared point out gun violence is a BIPOC on BIPOC phenomenonâŚmeaning white people need not apply.
For noting black people are the primary people shooting other black people, he had to apologize.
Ingham County sheriff apologizes for comments on gun violence and âpeople of colorâ, Fox47News.com, December 22, 2021
LANSING, Mich. â Lansing Mayor Andy Schor and other elected officials held a press conference to address the wave of gun violence in the city. Some in attendance took issue with comments made by Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth.
âThe vast majority of the gun violence in the community is being committed by people of color against people of color,â Wriggelsworth said during the press conference. âOf the 28 people currently in jail for gun violence on this date, 61 percent of the victims were people of color and 68 percent of the suspects were people of color.â
Pastor Terrence King is a part of the Assembly of Lansing Pastors, a group that has come up with ways to fight gun violence in the city. King said while most of the press conference went well, he was uncomfortable with comments made by Wriggelsworth.
âWhile there was some data given as a result of Black on Black crime, what wasnât mentioned, which would have been more balancing, was to mention the crime happening on all citizens and all ethnicities,â King said.
King wasnât the only one who took issue with Wrigglesworthâs comments. Community activist Melik Brown was at the press conference and publicly called Wriggelsworth out.
âWhen someone is speaking to me about young people dying in the streets of Lansing and then starts talking about stats, and blaming the victims and then starts blaming the oppressed for being oppressed, I have a problem with that,â Brown said.
Wriggelsworth has since apologized.
âWe need to find solutions on how to end 2021 on a strong note and my words on Monday did not do that and I apologize if my words hurt anyone,â Wriggelsworth said.
King said he understands people make mistakes and a lot of mistakes can be corrected, if a conversation is had, and both parties understand each otherâs viewpoints.
âBecause I am African American, I can help him understand a bit more about the culture and perhaps clear up some biases he may have that may have caused him to think and say the things he did during the process conference,â King said.
So gun violence is almost exclusively a black on black problem in the capital city of Michigan, and yet the white sheriff noting this problem is a greater problem than the phenomenon of of black on black gun crime plaguing the cityâŚand you still wonder why we say America is irredeemable, when noting who is responsible for gun violence is a greater crime than the racial group behind the gun violence.
Black individuals commit the bulk of the gun violence in Lansing, Michigan. How hard is this to admit?
