PARIS — The spreading coronavirus outbreak shut down France’s Louvre Museum on Sunday, with workers who guard its famous trove of artworks fearful of being contaminated by the museum’s flow of tourists from around the world.

Almost three-quarters of the Louvre’s 9.6 million visitors last year came from abroad. The world’s most popular museum welcomes tens of thousands of fans daily in Paris.

A short statement from the Louvre said a staff meeting about virus prevention efforts stopped the museum from opening as scheduled Sunday morning.

When I visited the Louvre in 1980, Paris was having a bus strike, so the museum workers kicked everybody out early. In the middle of the afternoon, the security guards did that famous “broom” sweep where they link arms and march dozens abreast through each huge gallery forcing all visitors out the front door.

France has particularly uppity employees, so it’s not surprising that this kind of employee action started in France. It will be interesting to see how far it spreads within France and around the world.
