Green card holders can be deported for committing any crime, even misdemeanors. Jose Manuel Gonzalez-Sandoval meets that criterion many times over. As of the time of this writing Sandoval hasn’t been found and is considered armed and dangerous.

KPHO TV5 hasn’t posed a video yet but they probably will soon. Fox 10 News clip is on youtube.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — A manhunt continues for a man who shot at deputies Monday night, according to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said Jose Manuel Gonzalez-Sandoval, 38, violated an order of protection at his ex-wife’s home and shot at two deputies as he escaped from the scene.

"He has no business being here (in the country). He’s made threats against law enforcement. Now he gets in a gunfight with two of my deputies," Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said. "This is outrageous that we have provided sanctuary in America for noncitizens — people who've committed crimes against our citizens — they have no business being in America. They should be deported."

Court records show Gonzalez-Sandoval has a long rap sheet that includes assault and domestic violence. Babeu said his deputies turned him over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after he was arrested earlier this year, but Sandoval wasn’t deported because he has a green card, meaning he is a legal permanent resident.

ICE spokesperson Vincent Picard, who is based in Arizona, issued a statement, saying: "Following convictions for multiple violent crimes, ICE sought to revoke his residency status by placing him in removal proceedings. In March 2010, an immigration judge ruled in favor of Gonzalez and canceled the immigration proceeding."

CBS 5 News was unable to reach the immigration judge late Tuesday for comment. Sheriff: Man Who Shot At Deputies Should Have Been Deported, August 18, 2010
