McCain, Kennedy, And "McCain-Kennedy" — McCain’s Friendship With Kennedy Did Him No Credit

In noting John McCain’s death, I referred back to Ted Kennedy’s death. Apparently both men died of roughly the same disease on the same day of the year.

Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (who served as an intern in Ted Kennedy’s "immigration office") Tweeted that

John McCain’s legacy represents an unparalleled example of human decency and American service.

As an intern, I learned a lot about the power of humanity in government through his deep friendship with Sen. Kennedy.

He meant so much, to so many. My prayers are with his family.

The rest of us--not Democratic socialists, that is--don’t think of McCain’s friendship with Kennedy as being to his credit. The two men were co-sponsors of the McCain-Kennedy Amnesty bill in 2005, a horrifying plan to legalize millions of illegals, with no plan to prevent further illegals from coming. McCain-Kennedy was a perfect example of the famous story about the Stupid Party and the Evil Party.

“IN AMERICA, WE have a two-party system,” a Republican congressional staffer is supposed to have told a visiting group of Russian legislators some years ago.

“There is the stupid party. And there is the evil party. I am proud to be a member of the stupid party.”

He added: “Periodically, the two parties get together and do something that is both stupid and evil. This is called — “bipartisanship.”[Immigration policy stupid, evil and hurting Americans By Peter Brimelow, Contra Costa Times, December 4, 1999]

Of course McCain always gave the impression of being more a member of the Evil Party. We discovered after Senator Kennedy’s death that Kennedy regularly told jokes about Chappaquiddick, which for our younger readers was an incident in which Kennedy accidentally drowned a young female member of his staff, and then went to enormous lengths to cover up the circumstances. (He was presumably driving drunk, but since he didn’t call the police until the next day, we can’t prove that.)

A member of the MSM, Ed Klein, a former editor of Newsweek and the New York Times Magazine and a personal friend of Kennedy, reported this after Kennedy died.

I don’t know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself. And he would ask people, “have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?” That is just the most amazing thing. It’s not that he didn’t feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too.

[One of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself”; Update: Audio added, Ed Morrissey, HotAir.com, August 28, 2009]

Despite Klein’s backpedaling about "it’s not that he didn’t feel remorse" this is horrifying news, not because of what it says about Kennedy himself, but what is says about his friends in the MSM and Senate. No one thought this worthy of public comment while Kennedy was alive. Did he make these jokes with his friend McCain? Who else heard them?

What else are these people saying to their friends in the press that we're not told?
