Michele Bachmann Discusses Children of Illegal Aliens

The New York Daily News has an article on Republican candidate Michelle Bachmann discussing the "children of illegal aliens". Part of the article is about children brought to this country by illegal alien parents, and part of it is about children born to illegal alien parents here.

In the article Michele Bachmann, GOP Presidential Hopeful: I Would 'Not Do Anything' for Children of Illegal Immigrants" (Aliyah Shahid, New York Post, October 30th, 2011) it is reported that

"Michele Bachmann is coming under the microscope after insisting she would not help the children of illegal immigrants living in the United States.

The Republican presidential hopeful made the eyebrow-raising remarks at a campaign stop in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Saturday [October 29th] after a Latino college student asked what Bachmann would do to the children of undocumented immigrants.

She said she would “not do anything,” for the children, adding "Their parents are the ones who brought them here," Bachmann said, as first reported by MSNBC."

This is a little confusing. The article says the student asks what a President Bachmann would do "to" the children of illegal aliens, and it casts her reply as saying she wouldn’t do anything "for" the children.

Anyway, it’s good that Michele Bachmann points out the responsibility of the parents for bringing them, and I appreciate the fact that she had the courage to say this to a Latino student rather than pander.

"They did not have the legal right to come to the United States. We do not owe people who broke our laws to come into the country. We don’t owe them anything."

Exactly! Right on the money!

"Bachmann has previously taken the hardline stance that she’s against the federal government giving U.S. citizenship to the children of those parents who came to the country illegally, which is the case today."

"Hardline stance"? I'd say she’s absolutely right about it.

" … Immigration came up at another stop in Ottumwa, Ia, where Bachmann suggested there should be a law barring citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants, according to the Des Moines Register. "We've got to end this anchor-baby program," she said."

Good, it’s good that she’s saying this. I hope she continues to say it. I hope the other candidates say it too. It needs to be made into a major campaign topic.
