From The New York Times op-ed pages:Racial Justice Demands Affirmative ActionBy SHERRILYN A. IFILL AUG. 2, 2017 …
Sherrilyn A. Ifill (@Sifill_LDF) is the president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
The author, Professor Sherrilyn A. Ifill (a Vassar graduate, pictured right), is, along with her late cousin Gwen Ifill (the distinguished PBS broadcaster), a descendant of Barbadians who chose to immigrate to America to enjoy better opportunities. Wikipedia reports:
“Ifill is a cousin of the late PBS NewsHour anchor Gwen Ifill. Their family immigrated to the U.S. from Barbados[14] via Panama, with Sherrilyn and Gwen Ifill’s fathers, who were brothers, both becoming African Methodist Episcopalian ministers.”It appears that neither prominent Ifill is descended from anyone who was ever enslaved in the United States. Barbadians, like former Attorney General Eric Holder, who was carefully raised within a West Indian bubble in the United States to keep him from being contaminated by the bad attitudes of African Americans, form a highly disproportionate percentage of black elites in law, education, and other sober fields of accomplishment.
Should future Ifills be granted special privileges despite the current generation’s elite status?
My guess is that future Ifills will be privileged members of the Legacy Oppressed class forever.
