Back in early January 2018, I counted up the 2017 homicides totals in the 50 biggest cities from local newspaper end-of-year stories, and found that murders appeared to be down 2 percent versus 2016. That wasn’t much, but at least it was better than the 22% increase nationally from 2014 to 2016.
Now the FBI has released its official count for 2017 for the whole country (not just the biggest cities): murders down 0.7%.
So my quick and dirty methodology 8 months ago worked pretty well.
