I heard about the case of Sam Melia in England, who lives in the Northern England town of Pudsey, which is near Leeds in Yorkshire. He’s just been convicted of “inciting racial hatred” for saying such things as “It’s OK to be white” and warned by the judge not to engage in any further free speech.

Racist activist Sam Melia has been warned by a judge to stay off social media about his trial, or face the consequences.

The 34-year-old was found guilty by a jury at Leeds Crown Court today for inciting racial hatred and intentionally encouraging or assisting racially-aggravated criminal damage.

During a raid on his Pudsey home in 2021, they found downloadable stickers for his followers to print out and place in public calling for non-white people to be removed from Britain among other subjects, including Jews, LGBT+ people, Muslims and asylum seekers.

After the jury returned its verdict, Judge Tom Bayliss KC bailed Melia until his sentencing hearing on March 1, but warned him about using social media to highlight his trial after the court was told he made online comments during proceedings.

Judge Bayliss said: “You really must keep quiet about this. Tempting as it may be for you, if you start making your views publicly on this, it will not go well for you.” [More]

Here’s the story from when he was charged, last February:

Samuel Melia, of Westdale Road, is also charged with encouraging others to commit an offence.

The 33-year-old appeared recently before Leeds Magistrates’ Court where he is accused of distributing the material in the name of Hundred-Handers — an anti-immigration group known to put up posters and stickers promoting alt-right nationalism.

It is claimed Melia was distributing material “capable of encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence, namely racially-aggravated criminal damage, intending to encourage or assist in its commission.” It is alleged to have taken place between April 2019 and April 2021.….

The offences relate to an ongoing investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East. He is now due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on July 10 for a preliminary hearing. A trial date has been fixed to start January 15 next year, and it is expected it will last approximately five days.

They didn’t say what the stickers were, though. Here, according to a BBC story on January 16, are some of the stickers here was printing:

The court heard police searched Mr Melia’s house in Pudsey and found a label printer and stickers with slogans such as ”It’s OK to be white” and ”Natives losing jobs; migrants pouring in”.

Mr Storey said further Hundred Handers-branded stickers contained slogans like ”Reject white guilt”, “nationalism is nurture”, “Labour loves Muslim rape gangs”, “We will be a minority in our homeland by 2066” and ”Diversity — designed to fail, built to replace”.

Here’s the Guardian:

Melia, 33, was described by the prosecutor, Tom Storey, as “media-savvy” in his running of Hundred-Handers, [An anonymous group chat] and “also careful to ensure that actions taken in support of what are ultimately racially offensive perspectives are somehow dressed up in a veneer of legitimacy”.

However, police had found stickers on his computer, featuring “overtly racist” messages including “Mass immigration is white genocide”, “Second-generation? Third? Fourth? You have to go back”, “There is a war on whites” and “They seek conquest not asylum”, the jury was told.

On one occasion he had written about how he was going to “plaster” his home town of Pudsey with stickers the night before a Black Lives Matter march.

Another time, the prosecutor said, Melia wrote that before a March Against Racism in nearby Otley, he was going to go out “heavy-handed with stickers” before later posting a photograph showing a sticker on a lamp-post in front of the Otley and Yeadon Labour party offices, which read “Mass immigration is white genocide”.

These were “all ultimately driven by a racist motivation”, the court heard.

In court, the police who searched Melia’s home said he had pictures of Adolf Hitler and Sir Oswald Mosley, which feature in the headlines of stories about him, but aren’t material to whatever his offence is — he wasn’t sticking them to lampposts.

They’re just being used by the prosecution to read his mind and decide what he really meant by “It’s OK to be white”.

The Daily Mail goes on to say:

Tom Storey, prosecuting, said the group chat’s name referred to a mythological Greek creature that had 100 hands — with Melia being the head of the animal and his followers being the anonymous limbs.

He added that Melia’s views were not illegal in themselves, but the fact he was allegedly sending out the downloadable messages to be printed showed ’that their only purpose was to stir up racial hatred’.

The trial continues.

The idea that the United Kingdom has laws that say you can be put in jail for saying — or writing on a downloadable sticker — “It’s OK to be white” is crazy.
