From Bloomberg and Yahoo News:
Somalia Leader Renounces U.S. Citizenship Amid Trump’s Rhetoric
August 1, 2019
Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo voluntarily renounced his U.S. citizenship, a country where he lived, received education and worked.
Here’s the Oath of Allegiance this guy swore when he became a U.S. citizen:
I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.
Of course, this oath, while still given, has been more or less a legal dead letter since the Warren Court’s 1967 decision in the case of Afroyim v. Rusk, in which the Supreme Court ruled, in the eloquent words of the majority opinion:
Just kidding!
Yahoo News is framing this as a Stunning Rebuke of Trump’s Racist Rhetoric, but this guy’s office merely announced he was renouncing his U.S. citizenship without elaboration.
A more charitable interpretation would be that he’s a Somali patriot — after all, He Went Back — and is committing himself to the (quasi-)country of which he is the leader (as much as anybody can be said to be the leader of Somalia).
Good for him.
Hope he doesn’t get blown up like that poor lady journalist who Went Back.
