South African Farm Attacks In May: 7 Dead; Elderly Farmers Shot, Beaten, Strangled In A Wheelchair, And Hacked With A Machete

These are the most recent "farm attacks" on whites in South Africa.

Reports say an unknown number of intruders managed to gain entry to the property by cutting through electric fences. The attackers opened fire on security guards resulting in one death. No arrests were made.

The woman was provided medical attention after the attackers fled.

The victim was found dead in his wheelchair, his hands bound. Two suspects, Bongani Mkhwanazi, 18, and Bokang Petrose Tsatsi, 23, were arrested. Items stolen from McKay were recovered including binoculars and a speaker.

The attack occurred in April 2021 and the arrests were reported June 3, 2021.

Reports say intruders gained entry to the property by crawling under a fence. The victim was gunned down when he went outside to investigate noises made by the intruders. His family managed to secure the farmhouse doors, denying the intruders entry. Consequently, nothing was reported stolen.

Reports say intruders outside Young’s farmhouse shot at him through his window. After diving to the floor for cover, the victim managed to make his way to a restroom where he called for assistance. Four or five intruders broke through the home’s kitchen door and, upon finding Young, held him at gunpoint demanding he turn over his firearms. The victim was unarmed, however, and the intruders left with his phone, watch, and bicycle. It is presumed the attackers suspected Young had called for help, otherwise the end result could have been deadly.

The 79-year-old was killed in front of his wife during an early morning home invasion. While robbery may have been a motive, nothing was reported missing.

Hannes Botha and his wife Emmerentia were ambushed as they returned home. Reports say the couple were attacked as they entered the home by two intruders who had previously gained entry. The woman sustained blows to her head and body. The elderly Hannes managed to secure his gun during the beating and alerted authorities by pressing an alarm button. The attackers fled in the couple’s small truck.

Reports say the man was shot in the leg when three attackers opened fire. The victim, however, managed to return fire, killing one of the intruders. A trail of blood suggests another attacker was wounded. No arrests were reported.

The incident occurred in Hennops Valei in the Gauteng province of South Africa on May 26, 2021.

Reports say the victim was beaten and strangled as the attackers demanded cash and firearms.

After ransacking the farm house, the intruders made off with cash, three hunting rifles, two pellet guns, and ammunition. They also ransacked the house and workshop, loading a welder, generator, and tools onto the man’s double-cab truck which they also stole.

Reports say an intruder attacked the woman after demanding cash and firearms. The attacker made off with an old cell phone and about 6,000R ($447.00).

Reports say the elderly couple was not seriously injured by the gunmen, who made off with the couple’s small truck.

Reports say the victim was hospitalized after suffering severe injuries to his head, arms, and abdomen. The attackers made off with cell phones.

Reports say the remains of 54-year-old Themba Isaac Vilakaz of Mpumalanga were found near Vrede, Free State. Two suspects have been arrested. Vilakaz went missing after being lured away from his home by a phone caller posing as police. The victim was the only farm attack victim identified as being black.

Vilakez’s remains were found May 28, 2021.

Reports say the victim, right, had been shot in his left ear. He was identified by his wife after being found near his soybean field. Stolen were a pistol and rifle the victim had with him. A suspect was captured and reportedly hanged himself while in jail.

Moldenhauer was killed May 16, 2021.

Reports say he was assaulted by five attackers. Nothing was reported stolen and the assailants remain at large.

Reports say Gerrie Brits, his wife Susan and their son were ambushed by three attackers as the family returned from a trip to town. Gerrie Brits was struck in the head and forced to open the home’s safe. Stolen were a shotgun, two handguns, a laptop, cell phones, cash, and a truck.

The incident occurred May 17, 2021.

A resident at the home was confronted by gunmen as he opened a door to allow dogs out of the house. Three victims were bound with electric cables while the attackers ransacked the home. Cell phones and jewelry were reported missing. The victims managed to free themselves and contacted authorities.

The attack occurred May 15, 2021.

Reports say the victim was checking on livestock when he was killed. Missing were the victim’s pistol and rifle.

One of the attackers was armed with a shotgun, reports say. The assailants ransacked the home and made off with cell phones, laptops, a television and other household items.

The property was ransacked and items were apparently stolen. The victims managed to free themselves and notify authorities after the attack.

Four attackers, including one who was armed, held up the residents and ransacked the home. Stolen were cell phones, jewelry, and household items.

The attack occurred May 6, 2021.

Although shot in the back and chest, Schutte was able to return fire causing the attackers to flee. He was transported via helicopter to a hospital in Johannesburg for surgery. He was reported to be in critical condition.

Nearly 18 years earlier, the suspect fatally shot a farmer and his wife, then loaded their bodies onto a truck that was later torched. The suspect is accused of assaulting and binding a farmer in in Frankfort, in the Free State province of South Africa.

One of the two arrested attackers who overpowered, assaulted and tied up a farmer in chains on the morning of 3 May 2021, just after 10:00, on a farm in Frankfort, in the Free State province of South Africa, was in fact on parole for the horrific double farm murder of Fanie Smith (42) and his pregnant wife Ina (33).

Fanie and Ina were attacked, violently assaulted and shot dead on the farm Vadersdeel on Thursday 30 July 2003, in the Free state province of South Africa.

The couple were then loaded into their vehicle and driven to an isolated area in Heilbron where the car was torched.

The bodies of the couple were burnt beyond recognition.

Two men were arrested shortly after the murder by Heilbron police and the Welkom serious violent crime unit.

Samuel Tsotsetsi (22), who was a herdsman on the farm, and his cousin Meshack Tsotsetsi (23) were found guilty of the brutal murder and robbery by the Kroonstad High Court.

Judge G.F. Wright sentenced the pair to 35 years each. 25 Years each for the murders and 15 years each for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

While driving down a road enroute to a hospital, the farmer’s vehicle was riddled by bullets from a person or persons hiding in bushes. Both the farmer and his son sustained injuries.

The suspects took cash and other items before fleeing. Both suspects have been arrested.

The sisters lived alone on the farm. The victims were reportedly beaten and stabbed. Two were hospitalized. The assailants made off with cell phones, cash, and a truck.
