If you listen to the Republican politicians, they are working diligently to try to stop the border invasion. They aren’t having much luck getting it done, are they?
The Federalist has an article raking new speaker Mike Johnson over the coals for caving in to the Democrats. “As if the speaker’s failure to use his leverage on spending weren’t bad enough, Johnson also conceded late last week that he would not insist on border security provisions being added to the annual spending bills. As a result, Johnson and any other Republican who votes for these spending measures will continue to fund the Biden administration’s fecklessness at the border” [Speaker Johnson Folds Like A Cheap Suit To Democrats’ Spending Increases, by Christopher Jacobs, January 14, 2024].

According to Marjorie Taylor Greene, part of the problem is that Republicans fear that a government shutdown will be blamed on them.
BREAKING — EXPLOSIVE: Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (@RepMTG) lambasts @SpeakerJohnson, says he’s failing on the job, failing Republicans, has had enough with him, and may need to be fired. She spoke in a heated podcast with Steve Bannon.

I’ve been through government “shutdowns” before. They aren’t really shutdowns of the government at all. In fact, some government employees look forward to them. In a way, they are like paid vacations. Sure, your paycheck may get delayed, but then once Congress is back in session and they finally pass a budget, you get back pay. In other words, you get paid as if you were working the whole time.
As for Border Patrol Agents, we were considered “essential employees,” so it was business as usual. Some of our secretaries (administrative assistants) and other support personnel were sent home, but, for most of the line Agents, work did not change.
Speaker Johnson makes the case that he had no choice but to do this even if he’s concerned about the border.
He might have a wonderful career as the head coach of the Washington Generals. The Republican’ts just cannot find a way to win. You might almost think it’s intentional.
