Reading the political news this past few days, I've been feeling a bit like the (fictional) English gent who, hearing about the Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 1939, reflected that:
The enemy was at last in plain view, huge and hateful, all disguise cast off. It was the Modern Age in arms. Whatever the outcome there was a place for him in that battle.Republicans, Democrats, Ryan, Pelosi, the Bushes, the Clintons: They're all on the same side, aren’t they? The contention of the parties is now just an empty sham. I’m not sure they're quite ready to cast off all disguise yet; after the election, maybe.
It is the Establishment trough-feeders in arms. On the other side are we Americans who want to preserve our republic in some recognizable form.
Back in my August 12th podcast I quoted Peggy Noonan writing the following thing in her Wall Street Journal column:
From what I've seen there has been zero reflection on the part of Republican leaders on how much the base’s views differ from theirs and what to do about it. The GOP is not at all refiguring its stands. [The Week They Decided Donald Trump Was Crazy by Peggy Noonan; Wall Street Journal, August 4th 2016.]Why would they, so long as they can keep their snouts in the trough?
Peggy’s remark would make a fitting epitaph for the Republican Party, who will lose millions of votes for ever — certainly including mine — if they succeed in their daily-more-obvious goal of getting Mrs. Clinton elected President.
