The Ultimate Warrior And The Fame Of A Dead Man’s Deeds

Pro wrestler The Ultimate Warrior (born Jim Hellwig, but had done a legal change of name to Ultimate Warrior) dropped dead the day after what Colby Cosh, writing in Maclean’s Magazine, calls a "valedictory, death-themed speech."

A reader writes

Jim "Ultimate Warrior" Hellwig died last night after giving a prophetic speech Monday about how the way a man achieves immortality in this world is by inspiring others.

Warrior did the university speaker circuit until Young America’s Foundation cut him off for saying "queering doesn’t make the world work" during a speech. I was planning to have him speak for a Youth for Western Civilization group but the Leadership Institute stopped their speaker program before we could finalize it.

Hellwig’s speech included this call to glory:

"Every man’s heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them believe deeper in something that’s larger than life, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized by the storytellers — by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him, and make the running the man did live forever."

It reminded me of a popular quotation from the Elder Edda (Havamal 75) to the effect that cattle die, your relatives die, and you die, but "One thing I know that never dies, The fame of a dead man’s deeds".
