A friend whose Biblical scholarship is much better than mine reminds me of Deuteronomy 28:43. The King James Bible has it as:
The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.
The New American Standard Version (1995) translates it as:
The alien who is among you shall rise above you higher and higher, but you will go down lower and lower.
This is number 28 in a long list of curses — madness, blindness, locusts, hemorrhoids, "the botch of Egypt," etc. — that will afflict those who transgress the Commandments, concluding with:
All these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee.
Hmm. Be interesting to hear a take on these verses from the Evangelical Immigration Table.
